Copier Technician BasicsXerox has been top of the line and durable printers. From time to time, they also experience minor problems, which are pretty normal during the life span of a printer. When experiencing printer problems, do not call a service personnel immediately - check first if you can repair the problem. Here are the steps that you can take when experiencing problems.• No power. Your printer should be securely connected to a power source with the proper voltage, and the electric current meets the specifications. Furthermore, it is best if your printer does not share the power source with other devices that requires high-power.• Paper jams. Check the proper loading instructions; maybe you have loaded multiple sheets at once the paper is wrinkled. There are papers that cannot be used in Xerox printers some of these are rough papers, transparent papers, and padded envelopes. In addition, check the paper if it is specifically designed for inkjet or laser printer and no not defeat its purpose. The surface where the printer is located should be flat, otherwise it could be the reason of jamming paper. Check also the paper tray and tray guides if it is in correct position. • Unusual noise. Open your printer door and use a flashlight to have a good look at the interior. Check if there are foreign objects or small insects that might have crawled there. If there is none, check your procedure on proper loading of paper and the surface which your printer sits should be level.• Cannot print. Check if the printer is securely connected to the computer; visually inspect the physical conditions of wire/cables used. When using Wi-Fi connection, make sure the signal strength is good. Furthermore, check if there is an error message in the control panel.• Overheated printer. This is a problem usually encountered with a laser printer; make sure the air vents of the printer are not blocked. You may verify the manual to check the space requirements of the printer. Let the printer cool down for at least 30 minutes. You may open some of the covers of the printer so that the air can circulate more.• Poor print quality. Check if the toner or cartridge used is recommended by Xerox. Then check the paper that is being used, maybe it is damp and need replacement. If the printer is a little old, maybe the transfer belt is the culprit, and it also needs replacement. If all of these do not work, then the problems may be on your voltage supply. It is best that you contact Xerox support. • Some of the colors are faded. Check your toner cartridge, see if it is damaged or empty and replace it.• Water vapor condensation. Turn off the printer and unplug it. Wait for the condensed water to disappear. It is recommended that you do not use your printer for at least an hour or two. Those are the basic printer problems that you can resolve and save the money for repairs. However, don't be so stingy - if the actions above do not resolve the problems - call a technician.

Service Contracts - Part I, CopiersFor any business owner who has blazed this same trail from being a mom & pop shop and into a real business, we graduate from printers to a copy machine, and then to a multifunction copier that was leased and not purchased. All of us go looking with excitement for an office in a commercial building to actually be a full-fledged business once we've outgrown the home-grown business. Then comes all the additional expenses we didn't see coming. Networking, furniture, the cost of commercial phones and phone line costs rather than residential, etc. One of the biggest unplanned expenses is the need for a copy machine, or at least that is where it starts. "We don't need a copier, we'll just use the printers we've had for the past few years" many people think. What we haven't learned yet is that printer costs are more expensive than copier costs.A copier can make copies for pennies, but a printer costs six to twenty (.06 to.20) cents per page. Once we start creating marketing pieces, printing invoices, accounting, inventory, etc, we find ourselves wishing we had bought stock in the printer cartridge industry. Then we wake up and realize we needed a copier. After a year or three, we next learn we shouldn't have bought that small copier, because now we need a huge one, and one that staples, collates, faxes, scans, acts like a printer and 25 other bells and whistles. So we do our homework and learn all about a multifunction copier. We see it is the exact answer for all our business needs. In fact, we can let go of all the printers and those expensive cartridges. We think we've found business nirvana with this new tool that does everything, until we see the price tag. Then our heart skips a beat and we realize the price of this machine that we can't live without, costs as much capital as we have in the bank, and payroll is next week. Finally we learn we can keep all our precious capital for our business, and still have our new business toy, a fully multifunction copier, simply by leasing it.After using our new toy for just 2 months, we found out we can sell a garage sale: • Printers • Printer cartridges • Fax machines • Fax machine toner cartridges • Copy machine • Copy machine cartridgesThen we don't even need an accountant to realize how much money we were spending on all those machines, buying new ones every few years, stocking up on all the cartridges, keeping it all organized, hoping nothing breaks so we don't have to make another capital investment. We realize we've started saving ourselves a ton of money, and we have one machine, networked so the whole office can use it, and it is 5-8 machines all rolled up into one. This new genius black box (or white) prints in black and white and 50-100 pages a minute. It prints in color, it scans, faxes, staples, collates and more. Our lease comes with a service contract and a service tech shows up once a month or so (depending on our copier lease), and they maintain it and it never breaks down. If it does, one phone call and they hop on over to fix it; no fear, no loss of more capital, no running down to kinko's to send a fax, nothing; all our business printing functions are handled. We wish we'd have known about this gem of a machine a long time ago. We realized once our business grew out of our home-office or garage, we should have leased this great invention. We reminisce about all the money spent on all those machines cartridges, toners, supplies, shaking our head at how stupid we were. We weren't stupid, we just didn't know.

Is copier sales a good industry? In a previous article I told you all of the wonderful reasons why you should consider a career as an account executive in the copier industry. By now you might be thinking that there are no disadvantages to a career in copier sales. But, you would be wrong. Allow me to play devil's advocate and provide you with the following caveats:1. There is not much social status afforded to a copier sales rep. You are ranked somewhere between a used car salesman and a telecommunications rep. Your friends won't think your job is cool. But, that's O.K. When they are still eating Top Ramen for dinner you can roll up in your brand new BMW and offer to take them to dinner and pick up the tab since you have achieved the financial stability that probably still eludes your friends three years after college graduation. 2. The job is hard. Really, really hard. But, not for the reasons you think. The combination of an awful lot of freedom coupled with the absolute necessity of a disciplined mindset can be a dangerous combination for most people. I knew a manager that used to say, "we give you just enough rope to hang yourself around here". This meant that no one is watching your every move, but, by the time it shows up in poor sales performance, you don't have enough time to improve the situation before the company is showing you the door.3. You must be able to survive on a meager base salary for at least six months to two years until your commissions start rolling in. Most base salaries in this industry are $20,000-$30,000 plus benefits.4. It could seriously take you two years to build a territory that rewards you with a copier sales salary of $60,000-$80,000 annually. This salary range assumes that you are really good at what you do and are at least at 100% of your annual sales quota. This leads us to our last point:5. The company might not give you two years to get it all together. Generally, after your first year in sales, if you are not at 100% of your annual sales quota your sales manager "will free you up to pursue other opportunities". In other words, "you're fired"! Make no mistake about it, your sales quota is not your goal, it is your minimal requirement. Actually, you are expected to exceed your annual sales quota. So, is copier sales a good industry? All in all, the copy equipment industry offers more advantages than disadvantages. If you consider yourself ambitious, energetic and in possession of superior people skills and exceptional communication abilities, this just might be the career for you.
